Health And Safety Policy
Carpet Cleaning Surrey Health and Safety Policy
Carpet Cleaning Surrey is committed to providing safe, responsible and professional carpet, upholstery and floor cleaning services. We recognise our duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors, visitors and members of the public affected by our work.
This Health and Safety Policy sets out our overall aims, responsibilities and working procedures. It applies to all employees, temporary staff and contractors engaged in work on behalf of Carpet Cleaning Surrey at any location.
Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and negative impact on the environment. To achieve this, we will identify and control health and safety risks arising from our activities, provide safe and well maintained work equipment, use cleaning products safely and ensure that all staff are trained and competent for the tasks they undertake.
We are committed to complying with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice and to continually improving our standards through regular review and monitoring.
Responsibilities and Management
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Carpet Cleaning Surrey rests with the company management. They are responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, maintained and regularly reviewed. Management will provide the resources, information and training needed to work safely and will ensure that risk assessments are carried out for our cleaning operations, equipment and materials.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing safe systems of work on site, briefing staff on hazards before starting jobs, checking that personal protective equipment is worn correctly and that equipment is used in accordance with training and manufacturer instructions.
Every employee and contractor has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff must follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear protective equipment provided and report hazards, accidents, incidents and near misses without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments covering our typical cleaning activities, including carpet and upholstery cleaning, stain removal, hard floor cleaning and the handling and transport of equipment and chemicals. Site specific considerations such as access routes, trip hazards, electrical points, occupants and pets are reviewed before starting each job.
Findings from risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work and method statements. These include clear procedures for setting up equipment, routing hoses and cables safely, using signage, ventilating work areas, managing wet floors and leaving areas safe and tidy on completion.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Carpet Cleaning Surrey uses professional cleaning solutions chosen for their effectiveness and safety when used correctly. All chemicals are assessed in line with relevant control of substances guidance. We maintain up to date safety data information and ensure that all staff are trained in the dilution, application, storage and disposal of each product they use.
Chemicals are stored securely in clearly labelled containers, kept closed when not in use and never left unattended where they could be accessed by children, pets or vulnerable adults. Appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection, is provided and used when handling or mixing chemicals.
We avoid unnecessary exposure to vapours and aerosols, ensure adequate ventilation and never mix chemicals unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer and covered by our risk assessments.
Use of Equipment and Electrical Safety
All machinery and equipment, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuums, agitation tools and portable appliances, is maintained in a safe and serviceable condition. Regular checks and servicing are carried out and defective equipment is removed from use until repaired or replaced.
Electrical safety is a key priority. Cables and hoses are routed to minimise trip hazards, kept away from sharp edges and sources of heat and never run through standing water. Staff are trained to check plugs, sockets and cables for damage before use and to avoid overloading electrical circuits at clients premises.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many tasks in carpet and upholstery cleaning involve lifting, carrying and moving equipment, hoses, tools and containers. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury we provide manual handling training and clear guidance on safe lifting techniques, use of team lifting for heavy or awkward items and the use of trolleys or other aids where practicable.
Work is planned to minimise excessive bending, twisting or overreaching. Staff are encouraged to take short breaks during physically demanding tasks and to report any discomfort or injuries promptly so that adjustments can be made.
Protecting Clients, Occupants and the Public
We take all reasonable steps to protect clients, building occupants, neighbours and members of the public during our work. Where appropriate we display warning signs such as wet floor notices, restrict access to work areas and communicate clearly about any temporary hazards.
We pay particular attention to safeguarding children, older people, people with disabilities and pets by keeping chemicals and equipment out of reach, never leaving machinery running unattended and ensuring that surfaces are left safe, dry or clearly signposted before areas are handed back for use.
Training, Information and Supervision
No employee or contractor is permitted to undertake work for which they have not received adequate training and instruction. Induction training covers general health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures, reporting processes and safe use of key equipment and products.
Further task specific training is provided on methods such as hot water extraction, low moisture cleaning, stain treatment and handling of specialist fabrics and floor types. Refresher training and toolbox talks are delivered periodically to maintain awareness and update staff on new procedures or products.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. An accident record is maintained and investigated to identify causes and any improvements required in procedures, equipment or training.
Staff are instructed on what to do in the event of fire, chemical spills, electrical incidents or medical emergencies while working at client premises. This includes safe evacuation, first aid arrangements where available and prompt communication with the client and emergency services when necessary.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Carpet Cleaning Surrey monitors health and safety performance through incident reports, feedback from staff and clients and periodic inspections of equipment and working practices. Lessons learned are used to update risk assessments, procedures and training content.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our activities, equipment, products or legal requirements. Updated versions are communicated to all staff and are available for clients to read on request.
By following this policy and working together, Carpet Cleaning Surrey aims to provide a consistently safe and professional cleaning service for all clients and to maintain a healthy and safe working environment for everyone involved in our operations.
